What if I told you that you could get closer to Jesus today–in one moment even, and in that singular moment massive changes in your life could occur.
Would you believe me? Would you label it as ‘hype.’ Would it make your heart beat faster because this is what you have been longing for?
We have all heard it said that change doesn’t happen overnight. Decisions on the other hand, they happen instantaneously.
It is this ‘instantaneous’ thought that I would like to explore and apply to our spiritual endeavors. Since decisions happen in an instant, then it stands to reason that the first step to change happens in an instant as well. Because once we make a decision to do something, immediately we set our feet to a new path. Immediately, we change our course. In a moment our thinking starts on a new journey.
The decision to get closer to Jesus is a no-brainer. We all want it, but for some mysterious reason we can’t figure out how to go about doing it.
Without a clear idea on the logistics of applying the desire, we simply can’t make a decision to do it. We all want it, but we all are stuck as to how.
Several years ago I was stuck too. And in my stuck-ness, my life was falling apart around me. My marriage, my children and my relationships—all crumbling…BAD! And I felt hopeless on how to make it stop.
It was in the midst of my pain, stuck-ness, and crumbling world, I heard the Holy Spirit whisper,
“You can trust Jesus—be like Him.”
These simple words pulled me out of my misery, helped me to make a decision that changed my spiritual course forever and led to the healing of my relationships. These simple words challenged me to start researching my Savior; what did He teach about, and why did He teach it? How did He live? What was His world like, how did He want me to live in mine? What I realized was this; if I want to get closer to Jesus, I have to become like Jesus.
I made a monumental decision that day to get to know my Savior better, so that I can ‘be like him.’ And instantaneously, I felt His presence.
In one moment He saw my decision and rewarded it. He began to teach me who He really was and what He stood for. My perspectives about Him changed, and it impacted every aspect of my life and every aspect of my relationships—especially my relationship with my husband.
For so many years I recognized Jesus as Savior—and then I just kind of left him there in that role. But the challenge to ‘trust him and be like him’ changed all of that for me. I came to realize that He is so much more than I ever could have imagined. He is my High Priest (He represents me before the throne of the Almighty), He is my perfect role model for living, He shows me Father’s beautiful heart, He shows me how to think, how to speak, how to act and react, how to forgive, how to love humanity, how to resist temptation. Most of all, he shows me how to live a life that pleases GOD.
AND here’s the kicker, He expects me to follow His perfect example.
When you and I don’t live like Jesus—we are far away from Him. When you and I are not like Him, marital disunity happens. When you and I are not like Him, relationships deteriorate, we become overly self-focused, dysfunction of all sorts reign, and general chaos and pain take over. HOWEVER, when we strive to ‘be like Him’ in all aspects of our life (In our thoughts, our actions, our serving, our words, our attitudes, our forgiving, our submitting)—He steps in and brings healing, brings unity, brings peace, heals marriages, heals relationships, and blesses our lives.
One decision changed my life. It will change yours too. Won’t you make a decision today to draw closer to Christ. Will you pray with me?
Prayer: Father. You are so good. You sent us your Son to heal us, to set us free, to break our bonds and chains, to restore us back to You, to save our eternal souls and to show us how to live a life that pleases you. I want, more than anything, to be closer to you and closer to your holy beautiful Son—Jesus the Messiah. Help me to draw closer. Open my eyes to Him, what he taught, why he taught it, and what he expects of me. Help me to follow his perfect example of living. I make the decision today to be like HIM. Help me Father. Help me Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. AMEN
