Being like Christ in every area of my life is my greatest goal. And let me tell you, it is the most challenging goal I have ever set for myself. It requires a death to self…daily…constantly. And I got to say—my ‘self’ don’t like to die!!
One areas of change that has been quite challenging is learning how to forgive like Christ taught us to forgive.
There is a certain person in my life who is constantly hurting me and the ones I love. This person is a professional at devaluing people, causing undo drama and confusion, and inciting chaos.
I used to find myself daydreaming about this person…and I’m sad to admit that they were not good daydreams. I often wished this person would just disappear, and I’ve been very tempted to pray for this person…but pray for them in a negative way.
But, I came to realize something, something that keeps me from praying negatively. It is this: I realize that my ‘enemy’ is a much loved child of GOD. GOD loves my enemy!!! GOD created this person. HE desires this person to succeed in life—especially on the spiritual side of their life. In fact, 1 Peter 3:9 insinuates that Christ delays His return because HE does not want to see even one of His kids perish…my enemy included!
Now that I understand this—I mean really, really in my soul understand this—I can no longer wish ill on my enemy. If I love GOD—AND I DO—I must make my heart line up with HIS heart and start praying the way HE wants me to pray.
Jesus was always doing this. HE is our great example for everything. And, He showed us how to effectively forgive. He says, “Pray for your enemies.” HE is so smart! He knew that this is the only truly effective way to remove all un-forgiveness from our hearts—pray!
GOD wants us to pray that the Holy Spirit changes our enemy’s heart and renews their mind. He wants us to pray that the Holy Spirit makes their hearts teachable, repentant, soft and loving. We are to pray that our enemy comes to really know GOD and become a true disciple of Jesus Christ. We must pray for our enemy’s deliverance from drugs, alcohol and bitterness or whatever kind of evil has them in bondage. Christ wants us to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us the name of the evil thing that has our enemy in bondage. Then we are to go after that unclean evil thing in Jesus Name. Bind it, muzzle it and ask GOD to curse it and kick it out of our enemy’s life—so that our enemy can walk in freedom.
If we don’t pray for our enemy, then something really scary happens—we become the ones enslaved. We become bitter and hateful. We become someone who is obsessed about the destruction of another human soul.
I know, because it was happening to me.
I thank GOD that HE opened my eyes and gave me the resolve to forgive. I thank GOD that HE allowed me to see my enemy through HIS eyes. I thank GOD that HE gave me Jesus who is my perfect example for doing life…loving, serving and especially FORGIVING.
My prayer for you is this:
1) That Father opens your eyes to see your enemy through HIS eyes. (He loves them and wants their spiritual success.)
2) That you can honestly grant your enemy true forgiveness.
3) That you can cement the forgiveness in place by praying for their great spiritual success!
